serena mclauchlan
Serena graduated from Edith Cowan University in 2000 after completing a BA Visual Arts Honours degree which included a six-month study exchange at the Amsterdam School of Arts, The Netherlands in 1999. In 2000 following a studio residency at PICA she joined Spiral Studio Artist Collective in Murray Street producing studio work and exhibitions.
Her first solo exhibition ‘Monochrome’ was held at Art House Gallery, Northbridge in 2001 followed by exhibitions at The Church Gallery, ‘The White Show’, Turner Galleries, ‘Ink + Air’ and inclusion in invitational awards; Bank West Art Prize, Sir Charles Gairdner Art Prize and Joondalup Art Award. The last six years has seen her working from Albany, exhibiting in PIAF Great Southern Visual Arts program including curating ‘Light-house’ and winning the Great Southern Art Award for painting in 2014.
Serena’s painting practice seeks to explore painting, light, matter and the visual sensation of crystalizing colour in monochromatic expanses, which reinvigorates the relevance of ordinary sensory experiences. Recent paintings are atmospheric and dreamlike in nature.
These works are inspired partly by living near Princess Royal Harbour and watching the colour shifts, and also by the environmental and atmospheric impacts of the bush fires distorting the sky.
